All new employees, even experienced ones, require training. Colleen Fagan is a “visual manager” who worked at smaller boutiques before coming to Uniqlo. Although she has spent years presenting clothes, she says, “I pretty much learned everything over when I got here.”
Take folding, which Uniqlo treats as if it were a scholarly discipline, with specific rules, best practices, and mandated times for completion. Employees at most retail stores fold with the assistance of a plastic board, but Uniqlo employees are taught the “body fold” technique and are expected to fold six shirts in one minute. The staff is told to practice this on their own, after work, until they get it right.
Cashing out is a timed art at Uniqlo, too; advisers must complete every transaction in less than 60 seconds. The other week after work, Lauren Venatucci, a manager in the women’s department, ran a cash-out contest. Advisers competed to ring up clothes while properly deploying the six standard phrases. The prize was an iPod, and the winner clocked in at 40 seconds.
1. “Hello, my name is Uniqlo, how are you today?”2. “Did you find everything you were looking for?”3. “Let me know if you need anything. My name is Uniqlo.”4. “Thank you for waiting.”5.“Did you find everything you were looking for?”6.“Good-bye, we hope to see you again soon.”
A brilliant strategist with uncanny fashion instincts, he is also unable to delegate, say Fast Retailing executives. He controls all decisions, down to approving samples and colors. Mr Yanai defends his meddling. “A good business manager”, he says, must “pay attention to the details.”
This micromanaging has pushed talented executives to quit the firm, leaving no obvious successor to Mr Yanai, who plans to step down as boss (but remain chairman) in four years, at 65. Previous attempts to cede day-to-day control have been aborted.
When pressed, Mr Yanai says that he has decided not to hand the company over to his sons. They will be big shareholders with board seats, but will not take operational roles. In this, he once again defies traditional Japanese business practices. Firms that rely on primogeniture, he notes, perform poorly. So, in the long run, do those that rely on a domineering leader.
Key points:
pretty much
pretty much是一個很口語化的詞語,像"pretty much the same"老美很常用。 l His comments has pretty much hit the nail on the head.
l You can pretty much throw in whatever you want.
l She kept pretty much to herself.
micromanage
In business management, micromanagement is a management style where a manager closely observes or controls the work of his or her subordinates or employees.
例句:l He is such a micromanager!
他可真是一個管頭管腳、事必躬親的上司啊!l The team leader likes micromanaging everything in the office.

Watsons promises to match any other store that is selling at a lower price.(屈臣氏承諾,保證最低價。)
One in nine people in New York work in the financial sector.(紐約九分之一的人從事金融業。)
IT sector, Financial sector或service sector,指的就是IT、金融產業、服務業。
•back off from 暫緩
The company backed off from expanding into China market until the business climate improved.(景氣好轉前,該公司暫緩將業務拓展至大陸。)
back off 原來是撤退(retreat)或走開(draw away.)

1. 用forget(忘記)代替do not remember(沒有記住)
2. 用ignore(忽視)代替do not pay attention to(不注意)
3. 用now(現在)代替at this point in time(此時此刻)
4. 用because(由於)代替due to the fact that(鑒於下列事實)
1. The project is important and significant.(這項計畫很重要,有極大意義。)
2. The project is significant.(這項計畫意義重大。)
例如,在下面例句中,the cover of the book(書的封面)可以省略成the book cover, is red in color(是紅色的)可以省略成is red。
1. The cover of the book is red in color.(書的封面是紅色的)
2. The book cover is red.(書的封面是紅色的)
1. University malls must be accessible and free from congestion in order that students, faculty and employees may have unobstructed passage through the areas of the campus.(校園道路必須是便於通行的,不堵塞的,以便讓學生、教師和職員能夠無阻礙地通過,到達校園的各處。)
2. University malls must be free enough from congestion to allow people to walk through easily.(校園道路不應當堵塞,方便人們順利通行。)

台灣人最愛說的一句英文是;My English is poor。

The Gap of Japan continues to grow its clothing empire, thanks largely to its star chain, Uniqlo, which now accounts for 78% of its parent's sales. Innovations such as Uniqlo's Heat Tech underwear and collaborations with A-list designers, including Jil Sander, are helping CEO Tadashi Yanai get one step closer to his goal of trumping Spain's Inditex as the world's largest apparel retailer.

BASICS are not normally considered the most exciting part of the business. But they are found in almost every wardrobe. Uniqlo, a successful Japanese firm with big ambitions, has transformed them into a goldmine. Having conquered Japan, it is now taking on the world.
Uniqlo’s parent company, Fast Retailing, is Japan’s biggest clothing company. Whereas many Japanese businesses are ailing because of the stagnant domestic economy, Fast Retailing is flourishing. Last year sales grew by 17%, despite the recession, or because of it: its clothes combine a touch of style with enticingly low prices.
優衣庫的母公司Fast Retailing(以下簡稱FR)是日本最大的服裝公司。
The company is hailed as an example of a new, globally competitive Japan. Its founder and boss, Tadashi Yanai, emerged from humble origins to become Japan’s richest man, worth over $9 billion. Uniqlo ranks among Japan’s ten most valuable brands. Its low prices are even blamed for fuelling Japan’s deflation.
Now Uniqlo, whose name is a contraction of “unique clothing”, is on the move. In recent months it has opened huge flagship stores in Paris, Moscow and Shanghai, which have been met with throngs of customers. Mr Yanai wants $50 billion in sales and $10 billion in profit by 2020. And although it boasts around 800 stores in Japan and 140 overseas, it plans to open a staggering 500 new stores annually over the next three to five years. Most will be in Asia, notably China, where it already has 54 shops but wants to have 1,000.
The job is a gold mine and a chance in a life time to get rich.
A: Where is Brad? I haven't seen him for quite awhile. B: Is he in Nepal? I'm not sure. He's on the move all the time. on the move有一個常見的同義字是in full swing,意思就是「正在全力進行中;正在最高點」。
The trend of health-conscious living is in full swing. 它其實還有幾個漂亮但我們比較不熟悉的用法: (1)堅持進行[(+on/along)] Education, however, has managed to stagger on in spite of these pleasant diversions. The work shifts at the factory are staggered.

請問,最近常常聽人用drama這個字,像He's a drama.
Everything' s OK, no big drama.(一切都好,沒什麼大問題)
Should there be any drama, just take it back and we'll fix it for you.
Sorry but I ate the last slice of pizza.
