  • Tokyo—

I didn’t want to go. But I heard stories. I heard about its glories. I heard about its greatness. I heard about how unforgettable a city it is. I decided to give this city a chance.
In Tokyo, a city that is described as one of the three "command centers" for the world economy, along with New York City and London. I watched people change from day to night. In the day, it’s as though they’re wearing a mask. A mask that is created by its cultural background. At night, it’s as though they shed their mask. They free themselves from the invisible stress coming from their cultural background. I feel for those people. I feel the pressure its culture has put on them. But I know that although they feel the pressure from the society itself, they’re born to live with it. It’s their destiny. It’s what creates their greatness. And they’re proud of it, which they should be.
As I walked along this metropolitan land, I feel like I can be a part of it. The great buildings in Shinjuku, the shopping malls in Shibuya, the delicious traditional dishes in Asakusa, and the trendy bars in Roppongi. Everything just kept on wooing me into liking this place a little more. My mouth’s still watering from the ramen I had in that tiny restaurant in a small alley located in Shinjuku. My head is still spinning from all the shopping in Shibuya 109 mall. My feet are still aching from the all night dancing and bar hopping in Roppongi. I think it’s not hard to guess that I want to go back again and enjoy more of that fascinating yet contradictory culture.
Example: Girls are often wooed by chocolates and flowers.
My Special Tokyo Experience
Tokyu Stay Hotel- “Home away from home”

I know that going to one of the most expensive cities to live in, the accommodation cost wouldn’t be cheap. And I had my heart set on staying in Shinjuku area, which is not a cheap area to begin with. I found an apartment hotel, which is located in very close by a subway station. I loved it for its location, its friendliness, its cleanness, its convenience, and its comfort. At the end of a tiring day out going around the city, it felt great to know I was going back to a “home away from home.” And I might add that, this “home away from home” is even very affordable for most people.
Had my heart set on:意思為我的心意已定。
Hanabi

The Hanabi, one of the most exciting and most important events for people in Tokyo. The word Hanabi means firework show in Japanese. Most people attending the event dress up in traditional Japanese clothing. I’ve never seen a more crowded subway before. The Hanabi I attended was the biggest one in Tokyo, which explained the crowd. The spectacular fireworks went on for ninety minutes. I was awed.

C’est la vie-- Nice

The city that freed me. The city that freed my soul. A place that after you set foot in, you’ll feel freed from yourself. Freed from the restrictions in the world. Freed from all.

In this southern French city, I see people that come from all over the world. Different colors, different cultures, different backgrounds. All come for the purpose of true relaxation. To drink in the beauty of this city. Artists come to seek inspiration. Families come for relaxation. People come for the inspiration of life.

Henri Matisse

I walked to the beach. I’ve always loved people watching at the beach. Because you see life, you see people, you see culture. And you get to feel the immensity of the sea. At the beach, by the bonfire, there were people juggling, people laughing, it’s like a big carnival within itself. I was having the fun of my life. I just wanted to shout out, “C’est la vie.” My soul is awakened.

C’est la vie :
相當於英文裡This is life的這就是人生。

來看兩個例子:something that you say when something happens that you do not like but which you have to accept because you cannot change it.

I've got so much work that I can't go away this weekend. Oh well, c'est la vie.

My Nice Experience

Bed and Breakfast- Le Dortoir (http://www.ledortoir.net/en)
In Nice, right in the center of all the buzz sits a very tasteful and fabulously designed little place called Le Dortoir. As soon as I walked into my room, I knew I was in B&B heaven. The design was so modern and chic but warm at the same time. I put down everything, got out the wine I just bought and sat at the terrace to feel the cool breeze. I took a long bath in the gorgeous cast-iron tub next to the bed. Everything was designed to details and just enough personal touches to welcome its guests. It’s the perfect start for my Nice adventure.

Hilton, Four Seasons, Hyatt.
2.Hostel:
5.Lodge:
7.Resort:

Kind of food

In Nice, their cuisine shows a clear inspiration from Spanish, Catalan and Italian traditions, and is strongly based on vegetables, herbs and olive oil. Typical starters are vegetable salad and cheese.

Where to grab food

The sunny boulevards of Nice are lined with exceptional restaurants for different tastes and budgets. Promenade de Anglais is home to some of the most prestigious cuisine in the city, all featuring a wonderful view of the sea. In the Old Town, you’ll find a mix of pubs and bars.

Tip for eating in Nice

There's a rule to keep in mind when you’re eating in Nice. Bread is seen in all meals there. Biting on a whole piece of bread might raise a number of eyebrows. Locals usually tear it into small pieces with their hands and then only eat the bits.

Chiang Mai- A breath of fresh air

Surrounded by mountains, I stepped into the city and instantly felt the breeze. That’s Chiang Lai, a city that calms you down and eases all your stress. I found my peace and inner soul there.

Chiang Mai is a place that offers something for everyone from nature lovers, culture vultures, adrenalin junkies to those who just wish to lie back in a luxurious spa and be pampered. It is home to over 300 temples dating as far back as the 13th century. Within half an hour's drive in every direction there are museums, ancient ruins, national parks, waterfalls, mountain trails, and other unique beautiful attractions. I enjoyed my Thai afternoon walking in Phu Phing Palace. The Palace is famous for its splendid garden that Her Majesty the Queen takes particular pride in it. And I walked to one of the temples, sat on the floor, closed my eyes and felt at peace. Finally, I found my sanity.

1. A breath of fresh air
2.Culture vultures
3.Adrenalin junkies

Kayan
A special tribe called Kayan is known for wearing rings around their neck. Kayan women often say that their purpose for wearing the rings is cultural identity. The rings are rarely removed since they started wearing them around the age of five. The coiling and uncoiling is a long procedure. They are usually only removed to be replaced by a new or longer set of coils. To set the record straight, women do not suffocate if the rings are removed, though the muscles covered by them are weakened. Many women have removed the rings for medical examinations. Contrary to popular belief, the neck is not actually lengthened. Each coil is replaced with longer coils as the weight of the brass pushes the collar bone down and compresses the rib cage.

Many reasons regarding why the coils are worn have been suggested. One of the reasons is that they think the rings can protect the women from becoming slaves by making them less attractive to other tribes. Another reason might be that the coils give the women resemblance to a dragon. And the coils might be meant to protect from tiger bites, perhaps literally, but probably symbolically.

2.To set the record straight

When in Rome do as the Romans do
“When in Rome do as the Romans do.” Keeping that quote in mind, I started my exploration of Rome. Observation is one of the best parts about traveling. You observe, you learn, and then you understand about a new culture. I sat on the famous Spanish Steps, sipping the cappuccino I just got from the café, trying to get a closer look at this passionate yet mysterious culture.

I think it goes without saying that no other city comes close. One visit and you’ll be hooked to this city. Rome has a glorious monumentality that it wears without reverence. Its architectural heirlooms are buzzed around by car and Vespa as if they were no more than traffic islands.
In Rome, I dream. I dream about the old Roman Empire days. About the glory, about the creations, about the mysteries within this great start of western civilization. It may no longer be the capital of the world, but Rome is an epic, bubbling-over metropolis harboring lost empires. I find it quite difficult to be uninspired while I was walking around the city. The city itself is inspirational enough with its vast collection of art, culture, cuisine, and people. I walked, I saw, I understood the magnificence of this Capital of the World.
Come close:
Example: The pizza I had anywhere in the world doesn’t even come close to the ones I had in Rome.
Heirloom:
Example:
My great grandmother’s diamond ring is one of our families’ heirlooms.
Fun Fact:
All Roads lead to Rome
It is often said that "all roads lead to Rome," and in fact, they once did. The road system of the Ancient Romans was one of the greatest engineering accomplishments of its time, with over 50,000 miles of paved road radiating from their center at the miliarius aurem in the Forum in the city of Rome. Although the Roman road system was originally built to facilitate the movement of troops throughout the empire, it was also used for other purposes by civilians then and now.

* Definition: Different paths can take one to the same goal.

Dolce Vita
Something I find very interesting while staying in my very first European city is that they live at a much slower pace in general. Every question was answered by a hand gesture telling me to wait. Locals gave me an explanation I couldn’t argue with, which was “dolce vita.” Life’s beautiful! It seems like I wasn’t enjoying my life enough. They like to seize the moment and enjoy life at its fullest. With their great food, great wine, great arts, what’s not to love about life?

  • LA—A Californian Dream

“In Los Angeles, everyone is a star.” Denzel Washington

Everything's so far away from each other yet people have the strong LA spirit, representing the true South Californian spirit. It is a place where you dream. It is a place full of hope. It is a place you come and dream the so-called American dream. It is where a nobody becomes a somebody. People come here for the hopes and dreams. People come for the sun. People come for the passion.
I come for the reason to relax and be inspired. It is the place to do so for the reason that this is the city that reinvents itself every couple of days. There’s always something going on or something about to happen. It is not just another city to sit in the sun and relax. It is truly a city of inspirations.
A nobody
For example: Most Hollywood stars were nobodies before they became famous.
A somebody
For example: After watching Avatar
, I want to become a somebody like James Cameron someday.
LA
In n Out Burger
It is one of the most famous fast food place in California. It started in 1948. Though times have changed, little has changed at In-N-Out. The menu-burgers, fries and drinks are still the same basic menu customers have enjoyed since 1948. Everything is still made fresh to order. There are no microwaves or freezers. Customers may observe french fries being made from hand-diced, fresh, whole potatoes. And the shakes are made from real ice cream. Also, they offer a “secret menu” for people to choose from. But you won’t be able to see them on the regular menu in stores. Here are some examples:
1) Animal style: Burger of your choice but with extra spread and grilled onions.
2) Protein style: Your favorite burger wrapped in lettuce instead of a bun.
1) Animal style:
2) Protein style:

William Shakespeare said “And this, our life, exempt from public haunt, finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, sermons in stones, and good in everything.”
Sydney, known for its diversity of activities, is the perfect vacation place for you, families, or couples. It is built around a beautiful natural harbor, with much of the foreshore being dedicated as National Park. On the shores of the harbor is the Taronga Zoo, which is known as “the zoo with a view”. You learn to appreciate the beauty of life, the beauty of land, the beauty of our world.
I lay on the white sand of Bondi Beach feeling the “Aussie spirit” and observing the beach culture around me. Some people walk around in bikinis and board shorts, holding on their surfboards and ready to jump into the waves. Others lay flat in the sun, trying to get as tanned as possible. I breathe in the air. I smell the sun, I smell the relaxation, and I smell the happiness around me. Sydney, a city that opens up your appreciation to the world and remember not to take things around you for granted.

By Wendy周

Istanbul- A city that grows on you

This city is anything but ordinary.
Grow on you
A city that grows on you就可以解釋為這個城市是需要慢慢用心體驗才可感覺到其真正的內涵。

Example: Stinky tofu might smell and taste weird at first, but it grows on you after a while.
Anything but ordinary

Example: James Cameron created a whole new imaginary world in Avatar. It is truly a movie that is anything but ordinary.
A French poet once wrote, "If one had but a single glance to give the world, one should gaze on Istanbul."
A truly magnificent city of the world, Istanbul is the only city in the world that spans over Europe and Asia. Istanbul is a living museum with its historical sites in open air. The museums, palaces, great mosques, and bazaars are just a part of what history has left them. The people and culture are what gives the city an interesting twist. Through art, they express their passion for life with vivid colors. Through music, they connect to the world with their mesmerizing melody. Through religion, they find peace with their ideology. Through cuisine, they tell the stories of family traditions passed on for centuries. Istanbul isn’t just a city. It is a story that ought to be told to all human kind.
Twist
My "Musts" in Istanbul:

Must Eat:
1.Food: Durum
is a kind of Turkish fast food. Meat, onion, and tomatoes are wrapped around a thin dough with a special sauce. “Durum”
2.Dessert: Lokma is Turkish fried sweet dough, which is covered in simple syrup.
Must Go:
*Day time
Istanbul Museum of Modern Art
It is a fine modern art museum located in a former dock warehouse in Tophane. Personally, I think the best time to go is around noon. You can browse around the museum first and then have a nice quiet lunch right by the sea on a deck in the museum café.
*Night time
Reina
The “it” place for Istanbul rich and famous. It is less of a club than a vast entertainment venue that includes several bars, restaurants and dance floors. You see the view of the Bosphorus Bridge while having dinner under the great atmosphere. Reina

Sex and the City:Kiss and Tell

“Maybe I can't leave New York. I don't know how I'd do someplace else.” - Carrie Bradshaw
New York- The Big Apple

It goes without saying that New York City is one of the most popular cities in the world. Is it for the reason that a lot of people want a taste of the Big Apple? Or is it that people just want to fit in the so-called trendy American lifestyle? Fashionably speaking, it is a city that tops all the cities in the States.
New York City is the place that combines the past, present, and future of the world. The vast numbers of museums in the city are what take people into history. From MOMA to street graffiti, you see art, you feel art, and then you understand art. From luxury dining to the famous chicken on rice in the financial district, you sense food is not just something to fulfill your physical hunger, but also a way of life. From taking a ride on the subway, you’ll see different expressions, different colors, and different cultures. From the stock markets on Wall Street, you predict future with numbers. From every New York fashion week, you forecast not only clothing and accessories, but movements in the world. There’s always something to do in the city. It isn’t just a city to travel to; it is a city to wander around for a lifetime.
Goes without saying
Example: It goes without saying that Steve Jobs is the coolest icon in the world.

So-called
Example: After seeing Avatar, I’m convinced once again that James Cameron is a so-called genius in the movie industry.
Fun Fact:

Big Apple has been a nickname for New York City for as long as I remember. It was first popularized in the 1920s by John J. Fitz Gerald, a sports writer for the New York Morning Telegraph. It is rumored that Fitzgerald got the term from jockeys and trainers in New Orleans who aspired to race on New York City tracks, referring to the "Big Apple." He explained his use in a February 18, 1924, column under the headline "Around the Big Apple":
“The Big Apple. The dream of every lad that ever threw a leg over a thoroughbred and the goal of all horsemen. There's only one Big Apple. That's New York.”
Later on, in the late 1920s and early 1930s, New York City's jazz musicians started referring to New York City as the "Big Apple." An old saying in show business was "There are many apples on the tree, but only one Big Apple." The nickname hit off in the public in the 1970s, due to a promotional campaign by the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau.
There are thousands, maybe tens of thousands of women like this in the city. We all know them, and we all agree they're great. They travel. They pay taxes. They'll spend $400 on a pair of Manolo Blahnik strappy sandals. And they're alone. It's like the riddle of the Sphinx. Why are there so many great unmarried women and no great unmarried men?

1.Stand on line--請排隊,大部分美國人說:「stand in line」;紐約人會說:「stand on line」。"If you're from the metro New York area you stand ON line. If you're from pretty much anywhere else you stand IN line. Except if you're from England, then you queue up."
3.Do me a solid--如果有人問你:「Hey can you do me a solid?」就是Can you do me a favor?
4.All right already!--這不是一句好話,意思是「That's enough! Stop it!」
5.Carded
6.Fuhhgeddaboutit--
聽起來是不是有點無賴,紐約人就是這樣發音:「Forget about it!」、「You want me to do you a solid? Fuhhgeddaboutit!」

7.Don't jerk my chain--"jerk one's chain" 是一個紐約人有趣的俚語。 就是"Leave me alone."

“Venice is like eating an entire box of chocolate liqueurs in one go.”
Truman Capote (卡波迪)

“The surface of Venice is constantly metamorphosing and painting Venice is almost like being a restorer, peeling off the layers to find the picture after picture underneath.” Arbit Blatas
“This was Venice, the flattering and suspect beauty - this city, half fairy tale and half tourist trap, in whose insalubrious air the arts once rankly and voluptuously blossomed, where composers have been inspired to lulling tones of somniferous eroticism.”
I still remember the feeling I had the moment I step out of the water cab and onto the land of Venice. I instantly felt mesmerized by the atmosphere. If people go to Las Vegas to tie the knot because of its craziness, then people do the same in Venice not because of craziness, but because you instantly feel in love once you’re there. It is like magic that passes through air.
Tourists visit for the reason to see for themselves that it is a place that really exists. Not just a made up city in books, movies, or poems. I felt overwhelmed by everything that I wanted to see and had to see. But as I walked, I realized everyone around me was going at a much slower pace. Standing in the middle of the magnificent piazza San Marco, I remembered Napoleon referred to it as the ‘drawing room of Europe.’ All senses reach a full satisfactory in this “City of Water.” I breathed in the coffee air and I knew I’d be a different person leaving this city.

*Tie the knot
Example: John and Jane tied the knots last March in Bali.
*
See for themselves
Example: Everyone told her how amazing Venice is. I had to see for myself to believe it.

Venetian Fun
(Venice Carnival)
The Venice Carnival is the most internationally known festival celebrated in Venice, Italy, as well as being one of the oldest. The tradition can be traced back to the beginning of the 14th Century. During those years one of the first laws made by the Serenissima was that masks cannot be used around the city at night. Later on, Venice Carnival attracted foreigners from all over the world. Masks have always been a central feature of the Venetian carnival. They have always been around Venice. People enjoy wearing them to attend the carnival in disguise.

Venice International Film Festival
Since its founding in 1932, the Venice International Film Festival has brought movie stars, industrialists, and the media to Lido, the narrow resort island that separates the Venetian Lagoon from the Adriatic Sea. It is the oldest film festival in the world. Over the decades, the Venice festival has changed focus several times. It had a strong Hollywood connection in the 1930s, then gradually shifted its attention to European and art films. In recent years, the festival has returned to the mainstream with screenings of commercial movies.
CIAO—
