22歲那年，帶著對時尚的狂熱與對世界的好奇，一個城市接著一個城市旅行，也開始了我的碩士生涯，舊金山、紐約、伊斯坦堡、羅馬、巴黎…destination在台北，希望和讀者分享我的世界地圖，每一個文化驚奇和語言衝擊！
一首動人樂章，經得起時空的考驗，如同韋瓦弟(Antonio Vivaldi)的《四季》協奏曲，旋律的喜怒哀樂流傳數個世紀；一齣經典名劇，橫跨世紀依然激發人們不斷思辯論爭，莎士比亞(William Shakespeare)的《威尼斯商人》，歷經不同歷史背景，世人依舊爭議著夏洛克作為一個反派猶太人，他到底是天性邪惡，抑或是被一再壓迫歧視而瘋狂的復仇？一個戲劇化城市，造就了世界經典，威尼斯的存在本身就是世界奇蹟。

這個音樂之都代表著浪漫，在威尼斯一切感性替代了理性，而感性來自於威尼斯人背後的墮落情懷，感性合理化一年中〸多天的面具嘉年華會，我彷彿走入一場浮誇的戲，錯覺告訴我這才是真正的人生。坐在gondola上才驚覺自己只是個威尼斯過客，可以欣賞一旁文藝復興時期建築的美，可以幻想和情人在嘆息橋下擁吻，可以坐在聖馬可廣場(Piazza San Marco)露天咖啡座看著鴿子，但終究就是個過客。諾貝爾文學獎得主Thomas Mann曾經這樣形容過威尼斯：
“This was Venice, the flattering and suspect beauty - this city, half fairy tale and half tourist trap, in whose insalubrious air the arts once rankly and voluptuously blossomed, where composers have been inspired to lulling tones of somniferous eroticism.”
I still remember the feeling I had the moment I step out of the water cab and onto the land of Venice. I instantly felt mesmerized by the atmosphere. If people go to Las Vegas to tie the knot because of its craziness, then people do the same in Venice not because of craziness, but because you instantly feel in love once you’re there. It is like magic that passes through air.
Tourists visit for the reason to see for themselves that it is a place that really exists. Not just a made up city in books, movies, or poems. I felt overwhelmed by everything that I wanted to see and had to see. But as I walked, I realized everyone around me was going at a much slower pace. Standing in the middle of the magnificent piazza San Marco, I remembered Napoleon referred to it as the ‘drawing room of Europe.’ All senses reach a full satisfactory in this “City of Water.” I breathed in the coffee air and I knew I’d be a different person leaving this city.

歷史可上溯到1268年，一連狂歡10天，這期間在威尼斯到處都有店家販售和租借各式彩繪面具、宮廷服飾、甚至提供化妝服務。聖馬可廣場會被各種色繽紛的面具與奇裝異服淹沒，晚上只見燈火輝煌，明亮如白晝，廣場上擠滿了年輕男女，有的放開喉嚨高歌，有的扭動腰肢狂舞，也有抱著酒瓶豪飲的。每個橋頭、巷弄、廣場、運河都是音樂與舞蹈，大大小小的運河上載滿遊行船隻；日夜不間斷的各式活動，白天熱鬧繽紛，晚上神秘浪漫，穿梭在容易迷路的小巷內和運河旁，滿城面具與戲服，真的會讓人幻想回到了〸七世紀。
The Venice Carnival is the most internationally known festival celebrated in Venice, Italy, as well as being one of the oldest. The tradition can be traced back to the beginning of the 14th Century. During those years one of the first laws made by the Serenissima was that masks cannot be used around the city at night. Later on, Venice Carnival attracted foreigners from all over the world. Masks have always been a central feature of the Venetian carnival. They have always been around Venice. People enjoy wearing them to attend the carnival in disguise.

CIAO—和威尼斯打招呼
老美很喜歡用Ciao這字，打招呼也Ciao，道別也Ciao，發音接近中文的“俏”。Ciao這個字來自威尼斯語的「s-ciào vostro」古意是「我是你的奴隸」，可能有供你差遣之意，引申「如果你需要幫忙，可以找我」的招呼或道別語。

如果硬要比哪一個行業的人學英文最痛苦，沒有別的，一定是IT。而且是科學園區裡的IT。這樣苦不只發生在台灣，大陸亦然。大陸有一則這樣的故事，有一位技術能力很強的大學畢業生找工作的時候說：「我英文不好，所以選擇去聯想，因為我去不了微軟或IBM。」過了幾年，聯想購併了IBM的PC事業部，所以還是不得不學英文。一位世界公民文化中心的學生，英文夠好，不久前他說自己一直困擾，要留在雅虎台灣，還是接受矽谷公司的挖角。英文是中文科技人避不開的宿命。
以下10句話是科技人常用的〸句英文口語，請你也多唸幾遍，唸到滾瓜爛熟熟吧！Roger that. (收到了=I understand/ I hear you)

文/Lily彭 我曾經在一個演講場合，聽見台灣採訪者國外學者，採訪者頻頻點頭說I know，I know，I know。在台下真是為他急出一頭汗水。I know的意思，你要講的我都知道了，老外心裡一定納悶，你既然都知道了，我還說什麼？ 英文已經不錯了，有時卻錯最簡單的地方。I know，I see，I understand，意思簡單明瞭，就是「我知道」或是「我明白」了。可是我發現台灣人偏愛用I know，說I see相對少一些，而且分辨不出二者差別。 I know是一個「不謙虛」的說法，意思是說「我知道的」，言外之意「不必你來告訴我」，特別是在別人指出什?東西你做得不對的時候，一句I know可能被誤會成你是「明知故犯」。假如用了過去式I knew，那就更不謙虛而且故意了。 I see是一句很能被接受的口語，似乎在別人的指點下「恍然大悟」--我終於明白了。
I understand則比I see正式，瞭解對方。瞭解對方的說法，較好的說法I see what you mean.或 I understand what you mean. (注意：mean是動詞，不要說I know your meaning，這句話會讓人誤解為：我知道你意義或存在價值)下面是I see的一些例句，建議各位將它納入你的口語中：1. Yes, I see. 是的，我明白了。
2. "The door opens like this" "Oh, I see." 這門是這樣開的。噢，我明白了。

文/Lily彭以色列人夏伊阿格西（Shai Agassi）是科技業自蘋果Steve Jobs之後的最佳業務員。就像領袖魅力〸足的Steve Jobs般，阿格西似乎擁有一種現場扭曲力場。《Economist》經濟學人雜誌這麼說。 An Economist article described Mr. Agassi as“the best salesman in the industry after Steve Jobs of Apple.” It continued,“Like the charismatic Mr. Jobs, he seems to possess a‘reality distortion field’” ●Reality-distortion field，現場扭曲力場，意思就是說任何人只要進入到他的魅力磁場影響範圍，就會被扭曲現實。 這個讓世界寄予厚望，四〸一歲的矽谷創業家阿格西，是一個科技神童，七歲開始寫程式，畢業於有「以色列麻省理工」之稱的Technion，32歲他將自創的Top Tier軟體公司賣給德國軟體鉅頭SAP，並擔任SAP技術長。2005年阿格西應邀加入由四〸歲以下的政治及商業才俊組成的環球青年領袖會（Young Global Leaders，YGL），會議聲言要在2020年令人們在「地球住得更好」（make the world a better place），引起了Agassi對能源方面的興趣，於是他抽絲剝繭，蒐羅一切有關碳經濟資料。阿格西在2007年創立了Better Place，這是提供電動車（electric vehicle,簡稱EV）、電池、充電站、電力公司與收費等系統整合方案。 他從未接觸過汽車產業，也從未接觸過能源產業，卻以驚人的創意，一舉結合、顛覆兩大工業。 阿格西說，Better Place的使命是為石油畫上句點，不是開一家汽車公司。 “Our goal is not to build a car company.” “Our goal is to end oil.” Better Place不做車，那它做什麼? 阿格西說：We're an energy network for electric cars. And when that happens it will have more influence over global automobile production than California's school board has over textbooks. “Once China does it, you don't have a choice,”Agassi told the conference in a discussion with Wired senior writer Daniel Roth. ●Tipping Point指劃火柴的時候，火柴頭一直在升溫，升溫，直到有一個點，忽然就燃燒起來，生成很大的火焰。這個點就是tipping point，也就是我們說的由量變到質變的過程。 ●In a big way是指大規模地、徹底的。 假如凡事都那麼有把握了（in the bag），什麼讓阿格西夜裡睡不著？「怕就怕在沒在對的時間解決對的問題。」他擔心自己動作不夠快。至於Better Place能提供的服務，人們都已經引頸期盼了。 So if it's in the bag, what's keeping Agassi up at night? Solving the right problem in the wrong time frame. He says that he is anxious (but not fearful) that he didn't get the ball rolling fast enough. 很多人問，"世界公民文化中 心" 到底在做什麼？我說，我們做「世界觀教育」。
有人似懂非懂，什麼叫做「世界觀」？
假如非解釋不可，借一下愛因斯坦的一本書"The World as I See it"，台灣譯成《我的世界觀》，改了一個字，我給世界觀的定義是"The World as You See it” ，你怎麼看世界？ 誰看世界的方法，影響了一代人和整個世界，每周「世界公民 Weekly 」專欄為您介紹一位世界觀的啟蒙者，我們一起看看究竟是誰，讓這一代人，看到一個不同的世界。
世界觀的啟蒙，其實上是一種絕處逢生的世界精神。在沒有希望的地方看到希望，在不可能轉彎的地方轉彎，在無法活下去的時候活了回來。絕處逢生，英文叫做"life and hope renewed"，這句話，蘋果電腦的創辦人賈伯斯（ Steve Jobs ），可謂當之無愧。他的成就和人格魅力定義了一個時代，他開拓了人們對科技的想像與期望；他改變整個電腦硬體業、軟體產業、音樂產業、手機產業 …也許還有更多。
他的性格一句話就看穿：
活著就是為了改變世界，難道還有其他原因嗎？“We're here to put a dent in the universe. Otherwise why else even be here?”
在閱讀諸多有關賈伯斯的文章，其中 Forbes 有一段"Why Steve Jobs Is Bigger Than Bill Gates"（為什麼賈伯斯大過比爾蓋茲）寫得有很創意，一起來讀：
He was there at the birth of the personal computer. He has had his second coming. He has healed one very sick company. And along the way he has changed the way we think about music and movies, telephones and computers. Okay, so it's not exactly "The Greatest Story Ever Told," but it's still a script with surprising zigs, inspiring zags and plenty of satisfying pay-offs.
他參與個人電腦的問世。他實現了重生。他讓一家病入膏肓的企業起死回生。一路走來，他改變了我們對音樂和電影、電話以及電腦的認識。好吧，就算這不是「有史以來最偉大的故事」，但依然算得上一部跌宕起伏而且值回票價的劇本。
Jobs has simply hustled his way into the middle of more of the most important technological moments of the past 25 years than anyone else. "He'll be for beginning of the 21st century what Thomas Edison was to the beginning of the 20th," McNamee says. "Edison was an inventor in an era of inventors, and Jobs is a product person in an era of products."

It's a comparison that fits Jobs as snugly as his signature shoes, putting his accomplishments in a very American context. After all, Jobs didn't invent the things that define the digital age any more than Edison invented electric light.

We can't know when the Jobs tale will end. Edison's story, however, tells us something. In the final few months of his life, Edison oversaw the construction of the electric train system between Hoboken and Dover, N.J. When the first train left the station, in 1931, Edison was at the throttle. He stayed there all the way to the end.
